The necklift is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of sagging skin of the neck and jawline. During the procedure, excess skin and/or fat are removed and the muscles of the neck may be altered. The necklift can improve the appearance of jowls, neck banding, fleshiness of the neck, and a ‘turkey waddle’. The procedure is often performed in conjunction with a facelift.
Potential candidates for a necklift include men and women who are in good health, have realistic expectations, and are looking to improve the appearance sagging or loose neck skin. Necklift surgery usually requires two to three hours of surgical time and may be performed in a surgeon’s office facility, an outpatient surgery center or a hospital. The type of anesthesia used will depend upon the particular case though general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation is often used.
During the procedure, incisions are made under the chin and/or behind the ears. When performed as an endoscopic procedure, smaller incisions are made. Once the incisions are made, the neck muscles may be removed or altered and/or excess skin may be trimmed and lifted. After surgery, a compression garment or bandage may need to be worn for several weeks. Prescription pain medication can help to control any discomfort that patients experience. Swelling and bruising are common and some numbness of the skin can occur. Stitches may be removed in about seven to ten days. Most patients find that they can return to work in about ten to fourteen days, though more strenuous activities will need to be avoided for at least three weeks and contact sports for at least six weeks.
