Fox 5 TV interview with Dr. Philip S. Schoenfeld –Newly FDA approved laser for the treatment of acne.

Our email box has been filled with questions about the interview with Dr. Schoenfeld on Fox 5 last week.  The segment was about the prevalence of acne even in adults and what treatments really work.  The focus was on the first laser FDA approved for the treatment of acne.  The laser is the Aesthera PPX which uses photo pneumatic technology.  We have this laser at Renu and have been using it quite successfully for over a year.  The story follows one of our clients, Erica, who has tried just about everything including Proactive and several other skin care products that claim to work.

For more information on the laser you can read the press release on our web site under “News, Events, and Specials.”  You can also watch the entire interview by clicking the link on our “Media” page.

The results are remarkable, but keep in mind that you will need a few treatments for maximum results.  We have rates for individual treatments, but you will definitely save money if you purchase a package. If you want to be blemish free, you also need to take care of your skin at home.  The products that Dr. Schoenfeld offers at Renu are all prescription strength.  That means that they have higher concentrations of the active ingredients needed to treat acne than what you can buy at drug stores or department stores.  Dr. Schoenfeld also offers fantastic glycolic/salicylic acne cleansing pads that he helped to develop.  They are available in 2 different strengths and both are under $20!

If you work during the day or are in school, we offer evening appointments Mondays and Wednesdays. We are also open on Saturdays and some government holidays.

I read about Renu’s Special Event oxygen facial in DC magazine.  I usually just flip through, but the photo of Madonna caught my attn. I guess Madge gets the same kind of facial in LA or where ever she lives.  I have my YOUNGER sister’s wedding coming up this spring so I thought I would give it a try now and see if it really works?  It actually did what the magazine said!  My skin definitely looked better and brighter for a few days.  I wish I could do this before every date! I would totally  recommend it!

I see several people every week who are either referred to me by a former patient or have been sent to me by other plastic surgeons for evaluation of previous rhinoplasty surgery.  Their concerns and complaints are varied, but, almost universally, there is a problem with their breathing.  When I see these patients I ask whether or not they had a great deal of work performed to reduce a hump on their nose.  The answer is usually yes, and that helps me to diagnose what may be contributing to their breathing problems.  After aggressive hump removal in primary rhinoplasty I frequently see collapse of the middle third of the nose.  The area I am referring to is the nasal valve, which is the narrowest portion of the nasal airway.  I will elaborate in future blogs on the causation of the collapse and correction of this vital area, but it is a deformity that once corrected leads to both a significant improvement in breathing and usually an improvement in the aesthetics of the nose, too.

Renu DCI was at a spa birthday party this weekend and had no idea that Renu was providing the services.  I go to Renu for facials but I have never tried any of their other services.  At the party I tried microdermabrasion for the first time and I am hooked!  The girl who did it was amazing and even did part of my back for me. I feel like my skin looks better after just 1 treatment and it feels amazing.  I don’t want to give up my facials because I love the shoulder massage, but I think vanity is going to win out!

Working in the aesthetic industry sometimes I forget that not everyone knows what Botox really does.  I was at a party over the weekend and the conversation turned to my favorite,” What really works?”  Every time I am at a party, eventually even my closest friends will ask me something about what can they do to look younger.

Botox, Botox, Botox!  Ok, I don’t really mean that Botox is right for everyone and a certain amount of wrinkles can give you character but Botox probably does give you the most bang for your buck.  Botox can relax the worry lines on your forehead, easy the frown lines between your eyes, soften crow’s feet, and even give your brows a lift.  Some of our clients just come in for what we call a “chemical brow lift.”  It doesn’t replace the real thing but if you aren’t ready for surgery, Botox might be a great solution to your tired looking eyes.

Remember if you want to give Botox a try, it can take up to 5 days before it works so plan ahead if you have a special event. (3-4 days is average)

The question of the week seems to be “What is Juvederm, and how does it differ from Restylane?”

Juvederm is a new facial filler made by the same company that promotes Botox.  The most common uses are to plump lips and fill in facial lines such as the creases around your mouth often referred to as marionette lines.  It is made from hyaluronic acid the same ingredient in Restylane.  Hyaluronic acid is a sugar based substance that is found naturally in your body.  There are subtle differences between Juvederm and Restylane, but the biggest reason most of our clients ask for Juvederm is that it costs the same amount as Restylane and lasts 1-2 months longer.  It also has a slightly smoother appearance, although I think Dr. Schoenfeld’s Restylane patients look just as good as the Juvederm patients.  The nice thing about both products is that the results are immediate.  There might be a little swelling and some people get mild bruising, but patients leave with the results they were looking for.  (There isn’t a 3-4 delay like Botox.)
