Question:
I would like lip augmentation with an implant. I would expect that my lips would be somewhat swollen after the procedure but are they so swollen that I would not be able to go to work the next day? Is there any chance that the swelling will persist longer than expected?

Answer:
I would not suggest showing up to work following permanent lip augmentation with a lip implant. You will likely have some swelling that will last a few days. You may also have some bruising following the procedure as the lips are extremely vascular. The length of time that the swelling will persist is variable but, I would recommend about 3 days for recovery.

Question:
I would love to have gorgeous, full lips. How does lip sculpting differ from collagen filler other than that it is a permanent solution to thin lips?

Answer:
I am not certain if their really is a difference between lip sculpting and collagen injections. I no longer use collagen for lip augmentation because the newer hyaluronic acid filler products such as, Restylane and Juvederm are so much more effective. I use these dermal fillers to sculpt the lips to give your lips the appearance that you desire. I have found that although the overall shape of the lip that people are seeking is usually similar, the amount of lip augmentation that each individual desires is quite variable and the real art behind lip augmentation is giving you a lip that looks natural, full, and one that you are comfortable with.

Question:
Can laser hair removal cause unwanted bumps and irritation?

Answer:
Laser hair removal does not typically cause unwanted bumps or irritation for very long after the procedure is complete. You should have what is called “peri-follicular erythema” after each laser hair removal session. These small red dots around the hair follicle simply indicates that your hair follicle has absorbed the laser energy and will likely be destroyed by the laser energy. The redness should dissipate in a few hours.

Question:
I am male, 32 years old with too much hair on my chest. I would like some of this hair removed permanently and I know exactly what I want to look like. Can laser hair removal be used for this?

Answer:
We have several men who come to Renu Med Spa and Plastic Surgery for laser hair removal of their chest. You can have some of the hair removed if that is all that you want. We usually suggest 5 or 6 treatments for effective laser hair removal, however, if you are only looking to have some and not all of your unwanted hair removed, I would suggest evaluating yourself after each treatment to see if you have had enough laser hair removal.

Question:
I’m interested in laser hair removal and I’ve noticed that there are lots of different machines out there that are used. What machine is used and what are its advantages?

Answer:
There are an enormous amount of machines which are used for laser hair removal. Each machine uses a different wavelength of laser light and perhaps a different way of delivering the laser energy. We have found that the Soprano XL with SHR technology is the quickest, safest, and most effective laser available today for laser hair removal in skin types I-IV (all skin types except for the darkest of skin types). The hair removal laser is a diode laser which is the gold standard of laser hair removal. The laser energy is delivered so that the heat energy builds up over several passes to the skin where you desire the hair to be removed from rather than one single shot of laser energy. The total laser energy that is delivered to the hair follicle is the same, but, when it is delivered slowly, the procedure is significantly more comfortable which is the real advantage of the Soprano XL laser.

Question:
What type of injectable filler is the longest lasting for diminishing forehead wrinkles? Does this filler have any complications associated with it?

Answer:
Forehead wrinkles are best treated with botulinum toxin such as Botox or Dysport. Once these wrinkles have been appropriately injected with the botulinum toxin then filling the deeper wrinkles with dermal filler can be performed. I prefer the use of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers for forehead injection because of the the relatively thin skin under which the dermal filler is going to be placed. Although there are no risks associated with the dermal fillers themselves the potential risks of having dermal filler injected into the forehead are skin contour irregularities, infection, and vascular injection which can lead to skin necrosis of the forehead.

Question:
I had chin augmentation with lipo 18 days ago. Over the past 3 days I have been getting sharp pains at the bottom of my chin. I haven’t experienced these pains before. Is this part of the healing process or a possible sign of something gone wrong?

Answer:
Pain following chin implant surgery which begins several days after surgery could be the sign of several different things. The first concern is to make sure that there is no infection in the chin implant surgical site. Once that has been cleared, it is possible that the chin implant is impinging upon the nerve which comes out of the jaw bone just above where the implant has been place. During placement of the chin implant these nerves can get stretched or compressed and you may be experiencing some pain from these nerves. If the chin implant appears to be in the right position then I would suggest being patient and your pain will likely resolve in a short time.

Question:
I am interested in having my chin reshaped. It is very pointed and I would like it rounded out

Answer:
The type of chin deformity you have described will unlikely be corrected with the placement of a chin implant. From what you have described, it is likely that you will need the bone of your chin drilled down or shaved in order to give you the chin contour that you desire. In the rare case that your pointed chin is also small, then an appropriately sized chin implant can be measured and placed for the proper facial proportions.
