Question :
I’ve always had something of a receding chin but I also think I’ve gotten a bit jowly as I’ve gotten older. Can a chin implant help both of these problems?

Answer :
A chin implant can certainly help with a small or recessed chin.  Jowling can also be slightly improved with chin implants if the implant is the proper size and shape.  I prefer an extended chin/prejowl chin implant because this implant not only augments the chin, but also provides a very natural appearance to the jawline.  Improvement in the jawline will help to correct the jowling that you are seeing although a facelift is really the ideal procedure for excessive jowling.

Question:

I’m a 20-year-old male with no chin. My nose is a little on the large side, which I wouldn’t mind except that it looks even worse with my tiny chin. I’ve been doing some research and wondering what the differences are between getting chin augmentation or jaw advancement surgery.

Answer:

There is a considerable difference between getting chin augmentation and jaw advancement surgery. Jaw advancement surgery is usually reserved for those individuals with a significant bite deformity. For jaw advancement surgery the jaw is usually advanced for an under bite. Jaw advancement surgery is very involved and will change not only the shape of your jaw, but the position of your lower teeth to your upper teeth. Chin advancement surgery is more similar to chin augmentation surgery. Chin advancement surgery is performed in order to move the chin to a more favorable esthetic position. Chin advancement is performed by cutting the bone of the chin and moving the most prominent portion of the chin in a forward direction and fixing the newly positioned bone to the remainder of the mandible with a plate and screw system. The procedure is relatively safe but, more involved than chin augmentation surgery with the use of a chin implant. Chin implant surgery can be performed under mild IV sedation and local anesthesia. A chin implant, I prefer silicone, is placed through a small incision made below the chin into a carefully created pocket along the front of the mandible in order to improve the appearance of the chin and facial profile.

Question:

I’m a 26-year-old guy and I’d like to get a chin implant. I thought that growing a beard before surgery would help to disguise some of the side effects of surgery and since I think the before and after will be pretty dramatic it might also help ease the transition to make it less obvious that I’ve had surgery. Is it okay to grow a beard before surgery or would I need to shave beforehand?

Answer:

You can certainly grow a beard prior to surgery before having your chin implant, however, I would prefer to operate on a clean shaven face, but, I have certainly operated on faces with full beards and mustaches. I might suggest growing the beard during your recovery from your chin implant when nobody is going to see you anyway.

Question:

I recently had a chin implant, but still feel as if something is lacking in my face. Would it be possible to inject fillers into my chin area?

Answer:

If you recently had a chin implant and you still feel as though you are still missing something in your face, I would discuss this with your surgeon. A chin implant addresses deficiencies in the strength and projection of the lower jaw. The chin implant does not alter other areas of your face such as the cheeks, if you are deficient in these areas as well. I recommend sitting down with good photographs and discussing the appearance of your face with a surgeon with good esthetic judgment and I think that you will be pleased with some of the small things that can be done to enhance your appearance.

Question:

If I gain a significant amount of weight in my face after chin implant surgery what would happen?

Answer:

If you gain a significant amount of weight in your face after chin implant surgery you will gain weight in all of the places that you normally gained weight prior to placement of the chin implant. The chin implant will have no effect on where your weight gain will show up on your face.

Question:

I suffer from an overbite that not only looks bad, but makes it hard to chew. Can a chin implant correct my overbite?

Answer:

Your question is one with several “correct” answers. An overbite is the result of the teeth of the upper jaw extending further than the teeth of the lower jaw. An overbite can be the result of the position of the teeth, the placement of the upper jaw, or the position of the lower jaw. Repair of an overbite in moderate to severe cases will require orthodontic evaluation and likely, oral surgery intervention to move the top jaw back, the lower jaw forward, or a combination of the two. A chin implant may help to camouflage the overbite, but, this would only be effective in mild cases. Chin implants work best when there is a normal bite and a weak or recessed chin.

Question:

I am a 36-year-old female who would like to have a chin implant and a nose job. Can I do these simultaneously? Should I wait to see what my nose looks like before I do work on my chin?

Answer:

I do not think it is necessary to wait to see how your rhinoplasty turns out prior to having chin implant placement. I perform these two procedures concurrently on a frequent basis. I use computer imaging in order to demonstrate to you what your nose will look like after rhinoplasty surgery and also, how a chin implant will help balance your face if a chin implant is necessary.

Question:

I have a protruding chin that I do not like. Is this something that could be fixed with chin augmentation surgery?

Answer:

I would not suggest having a chin implant placed in order to deal with your protruding chin. A chin implant will only project your chin even further. You may be a candidate for chin reduction surgery. The surgery is more involved than chin augmentation surgery and involves cutting the bone of the chin and removing a portion of the bone to retro displace the prominent chin.
