Question :
I’ve always had something of a receding chin but I also think I’ve gotten a bit jowly as I’ve gotten older. Can a chin implant help both of these problems?

Answer :
A chin implant can certainly help with a small or recessed chin.  Jowling can also be slightly improved with chin implants if the implant is the proper size and shape.  I prefer an extended chin/prejowl chin implant because this implant not only augments the chin, but also provides a very natural appearance to the jawline.  Improvement in the jawline will help to correct the jowling that you are seeing although a facelift is really the ideal procedure for excessive jowling.

Question:

I love my sister’s chin. Mine looks very weak in comparison. Could I get an implant to make mine look like hers does?

Answer:

If you have a weak appearing chin and jawline, then chin implant surgery is for you. Chin implant surgery is safe, effective, and extremely predictable. Chin implants come in several different shapes and sizes so it is not a one size fits all scenario, but, rather, the cheek implant that you receive will be the one that fits you best. I use computer imaging preoperatively and chin sizers in the operating room in order to choose the size and shape of the chin implant that we will mutually agree upon.

Question:

I had a chin implant placed about a week and a half ago and I’m very numb on one side of my lip and chin. Is this common?

Answer:

One of the risks and potential complications of chin implant surgery that I discuss with my patients is the possibility of transient numbness of the lower lip and chin following chin implant placement. The mental nerve is a nerve that supplies sensation to the lower lip and chin. The chin implant is placed just below the mental nerve along the mandible. Stretching of the nerve is common during placement of the chin implant beneath the skin and muscle of the chin. If the nerve is traumatized it will have temporary numbness which will take a few weeks to recover. Permanent injury to the mental nerve and thus numbness of the lip and chin is much less common.

Question:

How are cheek and chin implants shaped? Are they flat or round or some other shape?

Answer:

Chin and cheek implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Technically speaking, chin and cheek implants are shaped by molding the implant in the manufacturing process to the shape of real chins and cheeks from measurements obtained from skulls of real people. The chin and cheek implants that I prefer come pre molded, shaped, and sized and I will choose the implant based on what works best for the patient. The chin and cheek implants are not round or flat but anatomically shaped to best replicate the contour of the chin and cheek that the surgeon seeks to augment.
