Question:

My 4-year-old child was recently bitten on the ear by a dog and the top cartilage was torn. At what age do the ears stop growing so that the results of an otoplasty would be permanent?

Answer:

I am sorry to hear about your child’s unfortunate accident. I would suggest waiting until your child is about 5 or 6 years of age prior to otoplasty or auricular reconstructive surgery. The ear is usually of an adult size and shape by this age and the results of otoplasty surgery will be permanent.

Question:

I had a mini facelift 3 weeks ago. I’ve been experiencing a lot of pain which I didn’t expect with it being a mini procedure. It’s been getting better, but still uncomfortable. Is this normal?

Answer:

I feel strongly that two sources of information are at work when patients seek my advice with regards to the mini facelift. On the one hand, my pre-operative discussion with patients gives realistic expectations with regards to the length and quality of the recovery period from the mini facelift. I do not consider the procedure a weekend facelift as if it only takes a weekend for your face to recover from the mini facelift; the results will likely be not only short lived, but extremely disappointing. The second source of information about the mini facelift is from the media or less reputable advertising sources such as the “lifestyle lift”. I spend a lot of time dispelling the false claims with regards to the lack of discomfort and recovery time following a mini facelift. It is simply an expectation that cannot be met. So, to answer your question more specifically, some discomfort which is now resolving following your mini facelift is not only acceptable, but, also expected.

Question:

I am having an otoplasty soon. I use a hearing aid and was wondering if I will have to get new ones after my surgery.

Answer:

One of the issues that needs to be dealt with in otoplasty surgery is to not change the position of the ear on the head and not change the shape of the ear canal. Although I would not likely allow you to place your hearing aid in your ear for about 3 weeks following otoplasty, once your ear has healed, I do not suspect that you will need a new hearing aid for either shape, amplification changes, or comfort.

Question:

How will my ears be protected after I have otoplasty surgery? Will I have bandages put over my ears?

Answer:

Following otoplasty surgery I will put a full head wrap over your ears. The dressing is designed to conform to the newly created structure of the ears and to protect the ears for the first week following otoplasty surgery. After a week the dressing will be removed and you will be required to wear a head band over your ears at night time to protect your ears from trauma while you are sleeping.

Question:

Do the scars from blepharoplasty last long?

Answer:

Blepharoplasty incisions can remain visible for several weeks after your blepharoplasty procedure. I allow my patients to apply makeup to the incisions six days after the procedure. Some patients have very little visible scarring even a week after surgery, but the vast majority of patients who require eyelid incisions during their blepharoplasty will have redness and visible incisions around the eyes for several weeks.

Question:

Your photo gallery of before and after pictures of slimlipo is helpful. I can really see what to expect. I’m interested in the procedure and would like to know if it results in any scarring?

Answer:

In order to perform the laser liposuction procedure small incisions need to be made into the skin in order to introduce the anesthesia required for the procedure and the laser fiber necessary for laser liposuction. These incisions are less than a centimeter in size and we make every attempt to place them in relatively inconspicuous locations. These incisions heal without any incident. Obviously, as in any surgical procedure, a potential complication of the laser liposuction surgery would be scarring. Scarring can occur at the incision sites or can involve the areas where the liposuction was performed. I try to provide an excellent surgical outcome to my liposuction patients and remain conservative in my approach to avoid the potential for scarring and skin irregularities

Questionn:

Do you have to wear compression garments after laser liposuction?

Answer:

You do have to wear a compression garment following laser liposuction. Immediately following the laser liposuction procedure I will place a compression garment around the areas that have been treated along with absorbent padding to handle any drainage that you should have for the first day or two after laser liposuction. I ask my patients to wear their compression garment for at least two weeks after their procedure for the best possible liposuction outcome.

Question:

Post chin implant, will I be able to move my jaw?

Answer:

You should have no trouble moving your jaw immediately following chin implant. You will experience some post operative swelling and chin numbness, but, your chin augmentation should not interfere with the movement of your jaw.
