Question :
What’s the cost of a neck lift compared to a getting a full facelift?

Answer :
There is going to be a savings on a neck lift procedure opposed to a full facelift and neck lift. These two procedures, although often times performed concurrently, are often times done separately. The recovery from a neck lift is usually a bit shorter than having a facelift as well.

Question :
How common are revision facelifts? What can these improve?

Answer :
There is more than one kind of revision facelift. There are revision facelifts that are performed relatively soon after the initial facelift surgery which I would consider touch up procedures. These touch-up facelift procedures may be necessary if there is still redundant tissue of the neck and jowl after the initial facelift. The other type of revision facelift is a secondary facelift performed several years after the initial facelift. I tell my patients that the results of their facelift will last only about 10 years. The normal facial aging process of the skin and face will not slow down. Revision facelift surgery can be a bit more challenging than a primary facelift but the results of the surgery are equally rewarding. To answer your question more directly, revision facelifts are quite common.

Question :
My husband is interested in getting a facelift and I’m all for it. Are there any differences in how the facelift is performed in men?

Answer :
The male facelift patient requires more attention to the placement of the incisions to prevent visibility of the facelift incisions, and also to prevent alteration in the beard, sideburns, and hairline. Another difference between the male and female facelift is that the male has a higher incidence of postoperative bleeding due to the vascularity of the facial hair so meticulous hemostasis and possibly the addition of one day of drains is something I do more frequently in male facelift patients than in female facelift patients. Men are equally interested in rejuvenation of the neck as are females, but, tend to be less interested in areas of the face such as the nasolabial folds and mid-face as females.

Question :
I’m interested in getting a facelift and I’m wondering where you perform the surgery. Is it done at your office or in a hospital?

Answer :
I do not perform facelifts in my office.  I use a AAAHC outpatient surgery center for the vast majority of my facelifts but use the ambulatory surgery center at the local hospital if a patient has come from a long way for their facelift or they would like to recovery overnight in a hospital.

Question :
I want my jawline tightened. Does this mean I need a facelift?

Answer :
Tightening the jaw line can be achieved in a variety of methods and technique that I would choose is based upon your particular physical appearance and the status of your jaw line.  If your skin and fat is extremely lax then a full facelift or a mini facelift may be necessary to adequately tighten significant amounts of redundant skin.  If there is a great deal of fat but your skin has good elasticity or tone, then you may be a candidate for laser liposuction of the jaw line which will not only remove the excess fat and sculpt the jaw line, but also modestly tighten the skin.  Recovery from laser liposuction of the jaw line is extremely rapid as opposed to facelift surgery.  Laser techniques such as thermage may also be of benefit if your jaw line does not require an extensive amount of tightening.

Question :
I know the facelift improves loose and sagging skin but will it help with wrinkles too?

Answer :
When I see patients in consultation for facial rejuvenation surgery I discuss with them the components of the face which contribute to the appearance of aging.  Excess skin is something that can be treated with a facelift, and this is one of the most frequent issues patients see me for.  The quality of skin, however, is another issue.  If the skin quality is poor then treatments such as chemical peels, Fraxel laser, or full face laser resurfacing would also need to be performed if there is significant skin quality issues to include deep wrinkles.  Facelift surgery is really designed to reposition excess skin and facial soft tissue that has suffered from the effects of gravity over time.  Sagging and excess skin can be corrected with facelift surgery, however, deep wrinkles generally are not.

Question :
When will I be able to shower after my facelift?

Answer :
I like to keep the facelift bandages on and the wound dry for about 5 days following facelift surgery.  On day 5 or 6 you will be able to remove the bandages and wash your face and hair.  You may shower the day after facelift surgery as long as you keep your face and head dry.

Question :
If I get facelift at a younger age, will I age more slowly afterward?

Answer :
Having facelift surgery at a younger age will in no way affect the rate at which your face will age.  You will, of course, look younger after your facelift even at a younger age, but the factors that contribute to facial aging such as sun exposure, smoking, and genetics will still be the most dominant factors even after your facelift.  Often times, having a facelift will jump start you in taking better care of your skin which will slow the aging process down.
