Question:

Are intraoral incisions for facial implants risky because of the possibility of infection?

Answer:

Intraoral incisions are commonly made for the placement of chin and cheek facial implants. I prefer to use the intraoral approach when placing cheek implants but, use a submental approach when performing chin augmentation. The risk of infection when placing cheek and chin implants is certainly present, but, with the use of oral antibiotics, the infection rate is reduced and the approach, either intraoral or external, for implant placement has not proven to be a predictor of post operative infections.

Question:

If I gain a significant amount of weight in my face after chin implant surgery what would happen?

Answer:

If you gain a significant amount of weight in your face after chin implant surgery you will gain weight in all of the places that you normally gained weight prior to placement of the chin implant. The chin implant will have no effect on where your weight gain will show up on your face.

Question:

I suffer from an overbite that not only looks bad, but makes it hard to chew. Can a chin implant correct my overbite?

Answer:

Your question is one with several “correct” answers. An overbite is the result of the teeth of the upper jaw extending further than the teeth of the lower jaw. An overbite can be the result of the position of the teeth, the placement of the upper jaw, or the position of the lower jaw. Repair of an overbite in moderate to severe cases will require orthodontic evaluation and likely, oral surgery intervention to move the top jaw back, the lower jaw forward, or a combination of the two. A chin implant may help to camouflage the overbite, but, this would only be effective in mild cases. Chin implants work best when there is a normal bite and a weak or recessed chin.

Question:

How often is a neck lift performed along with a chin implant? What would be the benefit?

Answer:

I typically perform a chin implant at the same time that I perform a necklift in certain situations. The main reason that I would do this is that the patient who presents to me with significant redundant skin and soft tissue of the neck also has a deficient chin projection. Even though I can tighten up the skin, muscles, and remove some of the fat of the neck, without the use of a chin implant, in a patient with chin projection deficiency, they still do not achieve the degree of neck contour improvement that I can provide without the placement of the chin implant.
