Question:
During my teen years/early 20’s I played sports, spent hours on the beach without sunscreen. Now I am a 40 year old male adult. I am a general contractor and spend the better part of my days outside. I want a facial peel to help soften my rugged look. My question is, how long do I have to stay out of the sun before I can return to my daily work routine?

Answer:
The time that you will need to stay out of the sun following a facial skin peel will depend upon the strength of the peel being performed and the type of peel that we choose to perform. A rule of thumb is that the stronger the chemical peel applied to the skin, the deeper the penetration of the peel, the more effective the peel will be on skin damage, thus, the longer the recovery period. Many of our lighter peels will lead to some redness for a day or two followed by some mile facial skin peeling. These chemical peels are usually performed as a series of peels 4-6 weeks apart. Strict instructions will be provided to you following your chemical peel and these instructions will include the use of a good sunscreen that Renu Med Spa and Plastic Surgery can provide to you. You will benefit from applying the sunscreen daily long after your facial skin has been rejuvenated from your chemical peel.

Question:
What does a microdermabrasion entail? For what type of skin problems would you recommend using this procedure?

Answer:
Microdermabrasion is a very relaxing treatment that is best used for enhancing a bright tone to your skin. At Renu Med Spa and Plastic Surgery our microdermabrasion machines use a very fine diamond tip that is coarse, much like micro sandpaper would be. The microdermabrasion procedure removes the outermost layer of dead skin exposing the fresh and bright skin beneath the dead skin. We use medical grade microdermabrasion machines and they are indicated for the reduction of some superficial pigment changes to the skin and the reduction of very fine wrinkles but, the microdermabrasion procedure is best used to reduce the sallow appearance of skin that has been exposed to sun, wind, dryness, and simply changes associated with age.

Question:
As the years have passed too quickly, my face has begun to form fine lines and I am starting to look like a grandmother. Is it better to have a chemical peel or Botox injections to remove the wrinkles creeping onto my face?

Answer:
As the years pass we all start to look like our grandparents. Your concerns are common ones. The changes you will likely see to your face will be too much skin, changes to the quality of your skin, and deflation of your face from loss of fat. Since your concerns deal with fine lines I would suggest procedures that will address the quality of your skin such as chemical peels, lasers, and microdermabrasion. Issues with sagging skin are better addressed with surgical excision of excess skin or possibly the use of dermal fillers or autologous fat to deal with the deflation of your face. Botox is an excellent choice to help with some facial lines, but, itwillnot be enough to adequately address the areas of your face you are concerned with.
