Question :
My forehead is the oldest looking part of me. I have horizontal lines, frown lines, large pores and some age spots. Will a forehead lift help?

Answer :
A forehead lift will help to elevate a sagging forehead and brow. The horizontal lines, frown lines, and age spots that you are concerned with are better treated with either a chemical peel or laser skin resurfacing. A Fraxel laser treatment would be effective and can be performed in the office. Surgical intervention on the forehead is best used to address the excess skin of the forehead and position of the brow. The issues that you are equally concerned with is the quality of the skin of your forehead, and that requires more aggressive skin treatments.

Question:

Are there large risks in getting a forehead lift? Does it have the same potential for paralyzing muscles that botox has?

Answer:

A forehead lift is a relatively safe procedure. The trick to safety is making sure that two sets of nerves are well protected during surgery. The first nerve is the frontal branch of the facial nerve. These nerves, one on each side of the forehead towards the temple, is responsible for controlling the muscles of the forehead. Injury to this nerve can result in an inability to elevate the brow much like the effects seen with the use of Botox or Dysport. Fortunately, this injury is not a common one and is usually temporary in nature.

Question:

Where are the incisions made for a forehead lift? How bad is the scarring?

Answer:

The incisions for a forehead lift or browlift can be in different locations depending upon a few factors. If you are male, then the incisions will need to be placed in the temple hairline or directly into one of the creases of your forehead as you run the risk of male pattern baldness and visible scars in the future. If you are having an upper lid blepharoplasty performed at the same time as your forehead lift, then the approach I prefer in males is through the upper eyelid incision. In females, the incision for a forehead lift will depend upon how high the hairline is and how thin the hair is. An endoscopic browlift is performed with incisions placed entirely behind the hairline of the forehead and temple region. A pretrichal browlift incision is used in those females with high forehead hairlines prior to forehead elevation. All of these incisions heal with acceptable scarring and well camoflaged.
