CHIN AUGMENTATION WASHINGTON DC
Chin Augmentation
Genioplasty or chin augmentation can have a dramatic effect on the appearance of one's face. Chin Augmentation is used whenever there is a deficiency of the chin on either a front view or on profile. Chin augmentation is frequently performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty (nose job) as this helps to bring the face into balance when the size and shape of the nose is changed. Chin augmentation is usually performed with the use of chin implants, but, chin advancement surgery as well as fat injections or non-surgical placement of dermal fillers can also be used to change the shape and size of the chin.
Dr. Schoenfeld prefers the use of chin implants for chin augmentation. The implants come in various materials such as Silicone, Medpor, and Gortex to
name a few.
"I prefer the use of silicone chin implants as they come in multiple sizes and shapes, and are completely safe in the body with a very low rate of extrusion."
The Surgical Chin Implant Procedure
Chin implants are placed either through the lower lip inside the mouth, or through a small incision hidden beneath the chin. The incisions are usually only a couple of centimeters in size and heal very nicely. Sizers are used during surgery to determine the most appropriate size chin implant that should be placed. The implant is placed along the bone of the chin and along the jaw line so that it gives the most natural feel and appearance. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia with mild sedation, or general anesthesia if preferred. A dressing will be worn for about 5 days to help with swelling and to prevent chin implant shifting. .After Chin Augmentation
Postoperative pain is minimal. Potential complications from surgery are pain, bleeding, infection or extrusion of the implant, shifting of the implant, and most importantly, damage to the nerve that supplies sensation to the lower lip and chin. These nerves called the mental nerves, are carefully protected during chin implant placement however, stretching of the nerve is not uncommon and can leave you with transient numbness which will recover over time.
