Collagen Injections
Collagen injections are soft tissue fillers that may be used to fill in and improve the appearance of facial lines, wrinkles and some scars, including laugh lines, smile lines, facial folds and creases, crow’s feet and the lip border. Collagen may also be used to add fullness to the lips and even the backs of the hands. There are many different types of collagen, including both bovine- and human-derived collagen.
Zyderm and Zyplast are collagen injections derived from purified cow skin which are commonly used to fill wrinkles, lines and scars on the face and around the lips. Cymetra (micronized Alloderm) is an injectable human tissue collagen matrix derived from cadaver tissue which is commonly used as a filler for the lips, nasolabial folds, deep wrinkles and lines.
CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast are forms of collagen derived from human tissue that has been grown in a laboratory.
They can be used to treat frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines, smile lines, vertical lip lines, marionette lines, lip border and some scars. CosmoDerm is typically used for superficial lines while CosmoPlast is typically used for more pronounced wrinkles. Fascian is an injectable collagen derived from donor-fascia of the thigh muscle which adds bulk and stimulates the formation of collagen. Autologen is an injectable collagen which is prepared from small pieces of the patient’s own skin and used as an alternative to traditional collagen injections.
Potential candidates for collagen injections include men and women who are in good health, have realistic expectations and are looking to improve the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles or add fullness to the lips. Collagen injections typically take place in a surgeon’s office-based facility and, though anesthesia is not required, a local anesthetic may be used.
Depending upon the number and size of areas treated, collagen injections may take anywhere from fifteen minutes to one hour to complete.
During the procedure, anesthesia may first be administered and then the collagen is injected beneath the skin of the treated area with a small needle.
After treatment, some temporary throbbing or stinging, redness, swelling and bruising may occur, though these side effects are generally minor and fade quickly.
Recovery is generally fast and most patients are typically able to immediately return to work and other normal activities. The duration of results from collagen injections will vary greatly among patients and the particular type of collagen used.
Zyderm/Zyplast, CosmoDerm, CosmoPlast and Fascian typically last up to six months, while Cymetra typically lasts up to two months.
