Fat injection is a procedure in which fat is taken a donor area and then reinject it into facial areas like the chin and cheeks, lips, frown lines, crow’s feet, nasolabial folds and some scars in order to add fullness. Common donor areas include the abdomen, thighs and buttocks. Fat injections are able to temporarily restore a smoother, more youthful appearance. Potential candidates for fat injection procedures include men and women who are in good health, have realistic expectations, and are looking to improve the appearance of the skin or add fullness to the lips. ‘
Fat injections are typically performed in a surgeon’s office-based facility and can usually be completed within an hour. Local anesthesia is often used on both the donor and recipient sites, and sedation may be used as well. During the procedure, fat is withdrawn from the donor area using a syringe with a large-bore needle or a cannula attached to a suction device. The fat is then reinjected into the recipient site using a needle. Because some fat absorption will occur during the weeks after treatment, it is usually necessary to overfill the treated area.
Some swelling, bruising and redness can occur in both the donor and recipient areas after the fat injection treatment. While these side effects tend to clear up within about two days, some swelling may remain in the recipient site for several weeks, particularly if a large area is treated.. Pain or discomfort tends to be minimal. Patients are often able to immediately return to work and other normal activities, though some activities may need to be curtailed if a larger area is treated. The duration of fat injection results will vary but generally last up to six months.
