WASHINGTON DC REVISION RHINOPLASTY

Revision rhinoplasty is a corrective surgical procedure performed after a previous rhinoplasty surgery. Revision rhinoplasty can repair both functional and cosmetic problems which may have resulted from the first procedure. The revision rhinoplasty surgery is a very individualized procedure and there are many factors which must be considered prior to surgery. Dr. Schoenfeld will perform a careful evaluation of your nose during the consultation and discuss your goals and expectations in order to develop a surgical plan that is right for you. He will use computer imaging techniques to demonstrate what may be achieved for you during surgery.

Revision rhinoplasty procedures are generally more involved and complex than primary rhinoplasty procedures. Dr. Schoenfeld is a double board certified surgeon with extensive experience in revision rhinoplasty. Some portions of the surgical procedure may be covered by insurance and our experienced staff is happy to work with you and your insurance provider in determining just what and how much may be covered.

The Procedure

Revision rhinoplasty is carried out with either local anesthesia and I.V. sedation or with general anesthesia. The surgery usually takes two or more hours to complete depending on how complex the particular case is. While most of the incisions are often confined to the inside of the nose, it may be necessary to make a small “inverted V” incision on the columella, or the skin between the nostrils. If changes must be made to the nostril size, it may be necessary to make small incisions in the outside creases of the nostrils. Dr. Schoenfeld takes special efforts to camouflage any external incisions so that they heal imperceptibly. Working through the incisions, he will make the necessary changes to the nose which may involve the repositioning of cartilage or replacement of missing structures in order to achieve the desired outcome.

Recovery

The recovery after revision rhinoplasty is generally less extensive than after primary rhinoplasty procedures. Intranasal splints and an external splint may be applied to the nose postoperatively, though nasal packing is usually not necessary. Bruising and swelling can be expected, though often to a lesser degree than after a primary procedure. Pain or discomfort is usually less extensive as well. Prior to surgery, Dr. Schoenfeld will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions that will help to minimize bruising and discomfort and speed your overall recovery.

Internal splints, sutures and external dressings are usually removed within six to seven days. Most patients are presentable after about eight days despite the fact that the nose can appear rather swollen at first. Patients should not be alarmed and should be aware that it can take months for the swelling to fully fade and anywhere from six months to a year before the final result is fully realized.
