Botox is a sterile, purified protein produced in a laboratory from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. It may be used as an injection to minimize the severity of forehead creases, crow’s feet and neck bands. Botox may also be used to treat excessive sweating.
Potential candidates for Botox injections include men and women who are in good health, have realistic expectations, and are looking to improve the appearance of forehead creases, crow’s feet and neck banding.
Botox is injected in small amounts into the facial muscle responsible for the wrinkle. The toxin weakens or paralyzes the muscle, temporarily reducing or eliminating the previous skin crease while also avoiding new skin creasing. Discomfort is minimal and patients will begin to see the effect in five to seven days, though the maximum effect can take up to two weeks. There is no downtime associated with the Botox injection and patients are able to immediately return to work and other normal activities. Results are not permanent but tend to last between three to six months for most individuals.
