Question:
I’m interested in facial liposuction and I’ve heard that it can be performed with a laser. How is laser liposuction different from regular liposuction? Is it more effective?
Answer:
Laser liposuction can be used very effectively on the face and body. The differences between traditional liposuction and laser liposuction are several. In laser liposuction the laser is used to melt the fat into a liquid form which is gently suctioned from beneath the skin to remove excess fat. Traditional liposuction uses cannulas to avulse fat from beneath the skin in areas where there is fat excess. Laser liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia with a mild sedative where traditional liposuction is usually performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Recovery for laser liposuction is measured in days where traditional liposuction recovery is significantly more prolonged. The amount of fat which can be removed is the same for both traditional liposuction and laser liposuction and the results will depend upon the skill of your surgeon.
