When I was young and had chicken pox

Posted by Dr. Schoenfeld

Question:
When I was young and had chicken pox, I wouldn’t leave my spots alone. My face was left with numerous pox marks. Now I’m 16 and I really want to do something about the scars. What method is most commonly used for treating chicken pox scars?

Answer:
Chicken pox scars can be difficult to treat on the face. They tend to be singular and deeper than a typical acne scar. I have used lasers and dermabrasion to treat chicken pox scars. I have also used chemical peels to treat the chicken pox scars and I believe the results have been better with this method as I can treat individual scars without damaging the surrounding skin. In some cases where the scar is extremely deep and wide, a surgical excision of the scar may be necessary. As you can see, not all chicken pox scars of the face are treated similarly, but if the scar is unappealing, the scar can be improved.
