The Basics of Upper Eyelid Surgery
First impressions certainly matter; having beautiful eyes is one of your most important features. As we naturally age, our skin is impacted by the environment, genetics, and deposits that make us look older than we are. These factors are especially important on your face and eyes because they are always on display for the world around us.
Additionally, correcting these issues naturally can be difficult or impossible. That is why Dr. Schoenfeld offers upper eyelid blepharoplasty, also called hooded eye surgery, to help correct the signs of aging and give you the natural beauty you deserve. Upper eyelid surgery removes excess skin and fat deposits on the eyelids and immediately surrounding areas.
However, it is important to note that everybody has a slightly different eye shape, facial structure, and goals for their surgery. That is why it is critical to work with a medical professional with extensive education, training, and experience in upper eyelid surgery.
Knowing if You are an Ideal Candidate for Upper Blepharoplasty
Both men and women are candidates for this procedure. Anyone who experiences sagging or drooping in their upper eyelids can get the surgery, regardless of age. Typically, patients are between 40-70 years old, although we have had patients younger and older receive this treatment. One of the biggest factors is the smoking history of a patient. Quitting smoking before your operation can have a big impact on how long the results of your surgery last and will also help reduce any complications.
If you want to rejuvenate your eyelids with upper eyelid surgery, call Renu by Dr. Schoenfeld today to schedule your initial consultation! We would love to show you the difference we can make in your life.
How an Upper Eyelid Surgery is Performed
The first step to your upper blepharoplasty is to schedule an initial consultation. Dr. Schoenfeld will review your family and medical history and physically examine your eyelids. During this appointment, it is important to understand what you’d like your eyelids to look like after your surgery. You can bring pictures to help Dr. Schoenfeld understand what you’re looking for. As part of this consultation, we can also work with you to set reasonable goals and expectations for your surgery.
On the day of your surgery, you will come into the office. The upper eyelid surgery has the option of using only a local anesthetic, so you will be awake for the operation. If you should choose an oral or IV sedative, this can also be arranged and your comfort is paramount. The eyelid’s creases are marked, the excess skin or tissue will be removed from that eye, and very conservative removal of fat behind the orbital septum may need to be performed to remove the bulging in the inner corners of the upper eyelid. All incisions will be sutured so they can heal properly. Once the first eye is complete, the other eyelid will be marked to ensure symmetry between both eyes. Typically, there is some variability between your eyes, but ensuring they look the same once your surgery is complete is important. After your surgery, no bandages will be placed on the eyes but ointment will be applied to the eyelid incisions to allow you to heal, and you can go home the same day. However, you will need somebody to drive you home because your vision can be impacted in the hours after surgery.
Upper Blepharoplasty Recovery Process
The recovery process is generally straightforward. Some patients experience some minor blurry vision following their procedure that can result from minimal swelling and the lubricants used for their eyes during the surgery.
After your operation, the biggest concerns are ensuring that the incisions don’t become infected and that you keep the swelling down. You can take pain medications to help manage any discomfort after your surgery. There may be some minor bruising and swelling around the eyes, but using cold compresses and sleeping with your head elevated can help to minimize adverse reactions. Usually, patients are completely healed within two weeks.
How Much Does Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty in Washington DC?
At the end of your initial consultation, you will receive an estimate of the total cost of your procedure. An upper eyelid surgery cost is one of the most common questions we get. An upper eyelid blepharoplasty cost generally ranges between 4,000 to approximately $4,500. Individual variability impacts typically alter the final price.
