When removing a hump or bump on the nose, what are the instances when it would be filed down versus broken?
If you have a large hump on your nose, then you may require both filing and fracturing of your nose during rhinoplasty to properly correct the hump and leave your face looking appropriate. I like filing down the hump as I feel that it is a more precise way to incrementally lower the nasal hump. Once the bony nasal hump is lowered, then the sides of the nose will need to be brought closer together in order to close the bridge of the nose from where the hump was removed. In order to bring the sides of the nose closer together the nose needs to be broken with what are called osteotomies.
