Does lower lid blepharoplasty require much time for recovery?

Posted by Dr. Schoenfeld

Question:
Does lower lid blepharoplasty require much time for recovery? What are the complications of this procedure?

Answer:
The amount of time to heal from a lower lid blepharoplasty will depend upon the amount of surgery required to correct the deformities of your lower lid. If you are relatively young and your only complaint is excess fat of the lower lid, then recovery from lower lid blepharoplasty can be under a week. If your lower eyelid has a great deal of skin and muscle excess, and there is laxity of the lower lid along with herniated fat, then the lower lid blepharoplasty procedure is more involved and the recovery period can be a couple of weeks before the bruising and swelling resolve. The risks involved in lower lid blepharoplasty include ectropion or pulling down of the lower lid which leaves the eye looking round and exposed. Other potential complications include bleeding, blindness, scaring, and scleral show.
