Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure used to correct both the aesthetic and functional problems of the nose. Unfortunately, not every procedure will provide the intended results. Rhinoplasty is considered to be the most complicated of all cosmetic procedures. As a result, a nose job also has a high incidence of the need for a revision rhinoplasty.

The revision rhinoplasty may be a viable option for anyone who is unhappy with the look or function of the nose, following a primary rhinoplasty procedure. The revision rhinoplasty is a delicate corrective procedure. The procedure requires your surgeon to have a unique skill set and a great deal of experience in rhinoplasty surgery. The surgery requires certain physical and emotional commitments, thus it may not be a suitable option for everyone.
The ideal revision rhinoplasty candidate will be in good health, understand the procedure, and hold realistic expectations for the final results. Patients should be committed to the recommended recovery time, as well. This includes time off from work, proper care of the nose, no strenuous exercise for four weeks, and no contact sports for up to six weeks.
To determine if a revision rhinoplasty can achieve the desired results, a consultation appointment will be scheduled with Dr. Schoenfeld. During this time, he will discuss the previous rhinoplasty results, perform a brief physical exam of the nose, and review current medications. The techniques for revision rhinoplasty will then be explained, including any additional options for correction. Before/After photos and computer imaging will be used, helping patients visualize potential results. Should the revision rhinoplasty prove to be the right procedure, a personalized surgical plan will be created. At this time, the patient coordinator will also discuss the exact cost of the revision rhinoplasty.
Dr. Schoenfeld’s revision rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure, taking between one and three hours to complete depending upon the complexity of the procedure and the need to obtain grafts to reconstruct and stabilize the nose from other areas other than the nose.
Dr. Schoenfeld is extremely experienced in revision rhinoplasty and in extreme cases will utilize grafts from the scalp, ear, and rib. General anesthesia is Dr. Schoenfeld’s preferred choice of anesthesia as airway protection is his first priority, however, in cases where only minor revision is necessary local anesthesia with or without IV sedation may suffice.
Dr. Schoenfeld also prefers to perform secondary rhinoplasty surgery utilizing the “open” technique. An open rhinoplasty starts with a small transcolumellar incision at the base of the nose, between the nostrils. This will allow Dr. Schoenfeld to pull back the tissue of the nose and clearly evaluate the nasal structures. This technique allows him to fully assess the altered anatomy of the nose and provides him with the best exposure to the nasal anatomy giving him the opportunity to make the appropriate changes to the nasal structure which ultimately results in the best possible surgical outcome.
The revision rhinoplasty can provide patients with a dramatic improvement in the look and function of their nose. While Dr. Schoenfeld utilizes the safest and most effective revision rhinoplasty techniques, it is still an invasive procedure that holds several risks. The most common complications include infection, delayed wound healing, excessive bleeding, scar tissue formation, and even the need for minor revisions.
Patients should choose a highly trained, experienced cosmetic plastic surgeon to perform their revision rhinoplasty. The recovery period after a secondary rhinoplasty will take about two weeks. During this period, swelling, bruising, and mild bleeding are normal. The majority of these will dissipate over the first 8-10 days. Keeping the head elevated and applying an intermittent icepack will help to control the swelling. Mild to moderate discomfort may initially occur and Dr. Schoenfeld will prescribe appropriate pain medications and his detailed instructions will be covered to insure a smooth recovery.
In six to seven days, a follow up appointment will be scheduled with Dr. Schoenfeld. At this time, Dr. Schoenfeld will check the progression of healing, and remove splints/sutures. Patients are generally feeling well enough to return to work or school within a few days, although they should hold off on exercise and strenuous activities for another two weeks. Contact sports should also be postponed until the nose is fully healed.
