Question:
I’ve been having Botox injections for 5 years now. Is there a limit as to how many injections one can safely have? I’m just wondering if I will face any special risks after having these injections for so long.
Answer:
At one point there was a great deal of concern with the potential for adverse effects to occur in those individuals who had been using Botox for several years. There are a few but reliable studies that have shown a resistance to Botox in those patients where significant doses of Botox are administered in a single session, such as in neck muscle spasm patients, or cervical dystonia. The units of Botox which are required to treat cervical dystonia are approximately 10 times the amount that is needed for a typical cosmetic Botox treatment. To date, I know of no study or isolated report that has linked prolonged use of cosmetic doses of Botox to long term adverse events or side effects.
