Chin augmentation, also known as a genioplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the proportion of this important facial feature. Chin augmentation may include the placement of a chin implant or chin advancement surgery, as well as nonsurgical methods of correction, such as fat injections or dermal fillers. Chin augmentation can improve the appearance of a weak or recessed jaw; providing long lasting results.

The facial features all work together to create an appealing, pleasant appearance; but an area out of proportion can detract from natural beauty. The chin is vital to the balance of features, serving as a focal point for the lower face. It is one of the first things noticed by others, often affecting their initial perceptions. A small, recessed chin may give the impression of weakness and timidity. A large, prominent chin can look aggressive and demanding. While these assumptions are far from accurate, they can severely impact an individual’s confidence and self-esteem.
The ideal candidate for a Chin Augmentation
A chin augmentation can benefit anyone uncomfortable with the size or shape of the chin. Both men and women, from their teens up, will see a dramatic improvement in facial contour and proportion with the procedure. As with all surgical techniques, chin augmentation patients should be in generally good health, understand their upcoming surgery, and hold realistic expectations for their results.

The Chin Augmentation Consultation
Prior to planning a chin augmentation, a one-on-one consultation will be scheduled with Dr. Schoenfeld. This appointment is the key to receiving a satisfying aesthetic result. Here, Dr. Schoenfeld will perform an evaluation of the facial structure and features, review medical history and current medications, discuss the aesthetic goals, and use computer imaging software to assist in demonstrating the changes that you can expect from chin augmentation as well as help choose the proper size implant.

Dr. Schoenfeld will provide a detailed explanation of the treatments available for chin correction. Should the Chin Augmentation be determined as the best alternative, a unique treatment plan will be created. The exact cost of the procedure and payment options will also be reviewed at this time.
The Chin Implant Technique
Dr. Schoenfeld’s Chin Implant procedure will take from 30 to 60 minutes to perform, using a local anesthetic and IV sedation. Dr. Schoenfeld may elect to have the procedure performed under general anesthesia if the chin augmentation procedure is performed in combination with other facial surgical procedures. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, with no overnight hospital stay required.
The procedure begins with Dr. Schoenfeld making a very small incision within the lower lip, or along the crease immediately below the chin. From here, he will insert the chin implant and anchor it to the bone. Sutures are then placed along the incision for appropriate healing.
Used on its own, the chin implant can make a dramatic improvement in the appearance. For optimal results, patients often pair the chin implant with other procedures such as the Rhinoplasty, Neck lift, or Liposuction of the neck and face. Proportion and contour of the facial features can be achieved by combining the chin implant with other surgical procedures.
Understanding the Risks of Chin Augmentation
Dr. Schoenfeld’s 20 years of experience, and unique chin augmentation techniques, makes the procedure extremely safe. Few problems occur, but as it is an invasive procedure, there is always the rare chance for complications. These can include scaring, shifting of the implant, intraoral incisions, or permanent numbness of the chin and lower lip.
Recovering from a Chin Augmentation
The recovery period, after receiving a chin augmentation, will take about a week. Patients can expect to feel well enough to work from home in three to five days however, due to swelling, Dr. Schoenfeld recommends a week off from work. While normal activities can be resumed in just a couple days, strenuous exercise should be postponed for two to three weeks; contact sports should wait for up to six weeks.
Initially, slight swelling and bruising may occur, although the majority of this will dissipate over the first 10-14 days. Using an icepack will help to reduce swelling. If sutures are present, they will be removed in six days. While mild discomfort may be experienced, Dr. Schoenfeld will prescribe appropriate pain medications to allow for a peaceful recovery. Over the first several days following surgery, patients should stick to a soft diet. Temporary numbness is not uncommon, along the chin and jawline, but this will slowly resolve on its own.
