Should I be looking into injectable fillers or surgical options?

Question:
I am a 52-year-old woman with heavy skin damage due to the sun and smoking. Would a series of injectable fillers do anything for me or should I be looking into surgical options?

Answer:
Skin damage as a result of smoking and sun exposure is best treated with procedures that directly effect the quality of the skin.  These procedures may be as mild as microdermabrasion or superficial chemical peels or in the case of more advanced skin damage, Fraxel laser or deeper chemical peels may be necessary to correct your skin damage.  Surgery is not really used to improve the quality of the skin, rather the quantity of the skin.
