What’s the best way to go about this?

Posted by Dr. Schoenfeld

Question:
I’m planning on getting a nose job and was just wondering how obvious it is to people that you’ve had surgery. Is it so obvious that you’re better off telling your friends and family, or can you not tell them? What’s the best way to go about this?

Answer:
The degree of change that you can expect from a rhinoplasty will largely depend upon the shape of the nose that you now have and how much change you desire from a rhinoplasty. I have patients with extremely large noses or very deformed noses who have rhinoplasty that does change their appearance. What I absolutely strive for in my rhinoplasty surgeries is a natural looking nose. You will not wind up with a “done” appearing nose after rhinoplasty surgery with me. After about 10 days, although there will still be some swelling from your rhinoplasty, you will look relatively normal. My patients tell me that close friends and family recognize that they have had “something done” but acquaintances only think they look better and are not aware that they underwent rhinoplasty. I think that your decision to tell friends or family about your rhinoplasty is an entirely personal choice. If you are close with these individuals then they are going to want to help you out through your recovery process from rhinoplasty and also share in your joy and fears about having surgery in the first place.
