Question:
I would like shapelier lips. I am not interested in surgery at this time, but I am leery of silicone injections. Are silicone injections the best method at this time for lip augmentation?
Answer:
I would also be hesitant to have silicone injections performed for lip augmentation. The lips are extremely sensitive and the mucous membrane that makes up the appearance of the lips is very thin. The use of permanent filler such as silicone in the lips can be rewarding at times, but, more often the results are disastrous. If you choose to have silicone place, please see an experienced silicone injector and only have a very small amount placed at each sitting until the desired shape and size of your lips has been reached. Once the silicone is in it is extremely difficult to remove. I still prefer the use of hyaluronic acids for lip augmentation. Although the time that they will survive in the lips is significantly less than silicone, the procedure is extremely safe, well tolerated, and reversible if there should be any problems or slight imperfections of the lips.
