I’m a 32-year-old woman and I’ve been considering different

Posted by Dr. Schoenfeld

Question:
I’m a 32-year-old woman and I’ve been considering different skin resurfacing treatments for the sun damage and chicken pox scars on my face. Is dermabrasion or chemical peels a more drastic treatment?

Answer:
Chicken pox scars are difficult to treat because they are isolated areas of what can be pretty deep scars of the skin. I feel that both dermabrasion and chemical peels are suitable for the treatment of chicken pox or acne scars. If a chemical peel is chosen, then spot treatments to the specific scarred areas will need to be performed with a fairly strong chemical, such as 35% TCA with Jessner’s solution in order to penetrate deep into the dermis, stimulate new collagen formation, and alleviate the pitted scars that you are plagued by.
