Question:
Help! I am a 26-year-old female and my chin sticks out too far! I feel as if I could be Jay Leno’s sister. I understand how the procedure for a chin implant works, but how would you correct my problem? Or is it correctable?
Answer:
Reduction of the size and projection of your chin is a very different process than the augmentation of your chin. The extent of chin reduction surgery will depend upon the degree of chin reduction you require. In some individuals simply shaving down the bone will help reduce the projection and width of the chin to a more proportionate appearance. In other individuals, cuts into the bone with removal of bony segments and the placement of screws and plates to hold the bony segments in place will be required. A good photo imaging morphing program will help you and your surgeon decide on what would be the most effective approach and how much reduction in your chin is required. In extreme cases, your entire bite may need to be adjusted and this would require cutting the jaw bone and wiring your mouth closed for a period of time.
